Why is my Blanket Falling Apart?

Published on 2 October 2024 at 09:07

OK, let me start this out with your Victoria Chunky Snug will not fall apart as long as you take care of it. It happens all too often, however that you see customers of other companies that make blankets complaining about the fact that their blanket falls apart, that it pills, or that it has a hole in it. I want to address a few of these things.

Yes, of course if you buy from a company that charges way less than makes sense for a nice handmade chunky knit or weighted blanket, then chances are after a short time of use and after one time cleaning it, it will probably fall apart or loosen up and/or pill.

What is pilling? Pilling is when your blanket clumps together and gets those obnoxious little fuzzy balls that you cannot seem to get rid of and even if you try to, it will take you forever to get each one. They do make razors for these to shave your blanket, but you should never really have to shave your blanket.

Back to the topic... when you buy something, it usually comes with instructions on how to care for it. It becomes habit to avoid those directions so sometimes we accidentally miss said directions. I have never had this happen to me in selling of my blankets, but I have in my research seen that there are a lot of reviews regarding blankets that were beautiful, soft and worthy of bragging about, but then the next thing you know, they are either pilling, loosening up, or all of a sudden have a hole in the center.

I will tell you no matter how much a company says it is OK to wash and dry your blanket on normal settings, they are setting you up for failure. Think about when you purchase clothes, the condition before you wash and dry it... then after you wash and dry it multiple times, the condition of that article of clothing is no longer like new. It is now worn, the same goes for blankets, especially handmade blankets. So when you buy an item that you spend a pretty good amount of money on, you want to take care of it and you should take care of it! The best way to do that is making sure to do your research on washing of that specific material.

I will tell you I never tell my customers to put their blankets in the dryer no matter which material they purchase from me, I just suggest that they lay it out to dry and that gets rid of all of the issues regarding pilling and warping of the shape of the blanket or any chances of it falling apart.

I want to address the holes in the center of a blanket. I will say that it shocks me to see there are reviews with a chunky blanket that all of a sudden has a hole in the center, and I cannot even imagine how horrifying it would be to spend money on a product that I'm excited to get and see it fall apart. That being said, chunky knit blankets have holes in them, so you have to handle them with care. You cannot grab it by all the holes and swing it around. I see people all the time, even when they feel my blankets on display, they put their fingers in it and then they start moving it in all sorts of directions. Doing this, you will eventually have stretching and probably eventually a hole in the center of your blanket, so you have to take great care of it. That is not to say that there are not people who received bad product that looked OK and then after use it fell apart, which is absolutely unacceptable.

I have mentioned many times that when you get a handmade product, you have to take care of it. You absolutely do, but another good thing to look out for is what is a companies return refund and repair policy? I don't have a huge window for my returns and refunds because I do give care instructions and I hope that my customers will follow those care instructions to the T. However, if there is for some reason a blanket that has a default or defect, which I have yet to see in my time selling blankets, I want them to know that they can get it back to me within that time frame and I can fix the problem, and repair their blanket. I also offer a repair policy for a year. What that entails is if you accidentally somehow get a rip in your blanket or you somehow  have a seam pop because you did put your blanket in the dryer or whatnot, you ship that blanket to me and I will repair it for you and send it back. Buyer pays shipping.

I want you to be happy with your purchase and know that it is meant to last. Not every company has a repair policy, so do your research when you are purchasing your blankets and see how involved and how relatable the company you are buying from is. If there is no refund, return or repair  policy, if there are no true care instructions, then be cautious when going into that purchase.

The purpose of this is not to point fingers at any small businesses or big box companies that sell blankets, or the customers who have blankets with defaults... The purpose of this is to make you aware that you need to do your research when purchasing a blanket and then you also need to be aware of how to care for your blanket no matter who you buy it from. The best advice I can give is machine wash, gentle cycle, no matter the fabric (unless it is wool and they tell you to hand wash) and for my blankets never dry clean, never use softener, and always lay it flat to dry.

I hope you find the blanket of your dreams. Best of luck to you and feel free to ask me any questions or bring any concerns to me. Happy snugging!
