OK, let's address the elephant in the room. Why are chunky knit weighted blankets so expensive?
The first part of this is, there are less expensive options, especially from big box companies, and all depends on what you are looking for. Blankets can range anywhere from $200-$650 for a well constructed one.
If you are looking for something to lay across the chair or a couch to really take up the aesthetics of your living room a notch, then why spend $200-$650 on a blanket that is meant to have functionality? In a situation such as this, it makes sense to go to a big box and get one that is not meant to last as long or handle washing and usage as well.
If you're looking for something that is actually meant to last, then a handmade item through a small company or small business, that is meant to help you sleep better, relax, relieve stress or anything along these lines, then you definitely want to go with a small business and spend the money on it.
You see too often true ratings, where they speak to items falling apart, washing the item and it no longer looking the way it did with pilling, etc. or even the size not being true to what was advertised. Be sure to look at the negative reviews and get the whole story before purchasing. Now that's not to say that you don't have your bitter Betties who just love to leave negative reviews and took their blanket to the dry cleaner when they were told not to or they let their dog destroy the blanket not understanding why there's a hole in the center of it, however, do your research. Ask questions.
OK, how do I trust a company when you're telling me to check the reviews and there's not a lot of reviews because the company is new? I say check the return or refund policies, check to see if they have washing instructions and if they emphasize how to care for the item. Check to see if they offer repairs... your cat might snag your blanket and you want to know that if your cat accidentally snagged your blanket, you can get it repaired since you did spend a good deal of money for that item.
Reach out to the business and ask questions and if they are a good business and a good purchase, then they will happily answer any questions that you ask about their product.
Moral of the story it is true quite often when they say you get what you pay for. If you're looking for an item that's meant to last, that's beautifully handmade, and that had care put into it... one that isn't just a number or a dollar sign to the maker, it is going to cost more. If you buy something that is significantly cheaper when it comes to home goods or products, your typically going to see that item not last as long, not wash up well and not be as comfortable. You just have to know what you are looking for.
I'm not going to buy a vehicle that is a gas guzzler if I'm going to be driving 200 miles a day round-trip for work because I know that vehicle is going to get beat up and it's going to cost me in the long run. So if I am going to lay my blanket on the couch and I just wan to really make my living room look a certain way, I'm goimg to go for the cheaper item, especially if I have toddlers or perhaps puppies that chew. But if I'm looking for a blanket that I'm going to take great care of that is beautiful and helps me sleep better at night and relieves anxiety, then I'm going to spend on that because I'm essentially spending on a service. Just know what you were looking for, what purpose you want your blanket to serve and start there when you're doing your shopping.
Best of luck I hope you find the blanket you are looking for!
